How to add a link to an Instagram post in 2026, now that Meta charges for it

Instagram now sells clickable post links through Meta One, from $49.99 a month for four. Here's where a link still works for free, and what applies to DMs.

How to Add a Link to an Instagram Post After Meta One
On this page

In short:

  • You can now put a clickable link in an Instagram post, but only by paying for Meta One, Meta's subscription launched on 15 September 2026.
  • The cheapest Meta One tier with Instagram links is Advanced, from $49.99 a month, which includes four linked posts and four linked Reels.
  • Without Meta One, a URL typed into a caption or a comment is not clickable.
  • Four places still carry a link for free: your bio (up to five links), a Story link sticker, a direct message, and a paid ad.
  • On Facebook, Pages without a subscription are now limited to two link posts a month.
  • Meta has not published any link limit for direct messages. That is not the same as confirming there isn't one.

Since Instagram launched in 2010, the answer to "can I put a link in an Instagram post?" was no. On 15 September 2026 it became "yes, if you pay."

If you are working out how to share a link on Instagram now, the free routes still work. The most direct runs through DMs, which the Instagram DM automation guide covers in full.

This page covers what changed, what it costs, and what still works for free.

Six Instagram surfaces compared: links in a bio, a Story link sticker, a direct message and a paid ad are tappable; links in a caption or a comment are plain text.

Where a link can be tapped on Instagram without a Meta One subscription.

Yes, but only with a Meta One subscription. Meta lists "links in organic posts and reels" among the publishing features in its business tiers, from Advanced upward.

Without a subscription, nothing has changed. A URL you type into a caption shows up as plain text. Nobody can tap it.

The paid route grew out of a test. In March 2026 Instagram let some Meta Verified subscribers add clickable caption links. One blogger in that test reported an in-app limit of "up to 10 links a month."

Source: Engadget, 12 March 2026. The 10-link figure is that tester's report, not a published Meta number, and it belongs to the test rather than to Meta One.

What Meta One charges for Instagram post links

Meta's help center lists these Instagram link allowances under Meta One for Business:

TierPriceLinked posts / monthLinked Reels / month
Essentialfrom $14.99none listednone listed
Advancedfrom $49.9944
Expertfrom $14988
Maxfrom $4991212

Sources: prices from Meta, 15 September 2026; allowances from Meta Help Center, checked 30 September 2026.

Bar chart of Meta One business tiers: Essential lists no Instagram links, Advanced includes 8 linked items a month, Expert 16 and Max 24, costing about $6.25, $9.31 and $20.79 per item.

Cost per linked item rises with each tier, because the higher tiers bundle more than links.

Do the division and the Advanced tier costs about $6.25 per linked post or Reel, if links are the only feature you use. Meta One bundles other tools too, so that figure is a ceiling, not a price.

Meta's help page adds two rules. The allowance resets on the date your subscription renews, and unused links don't carry over to the next month. You also can't edit links after you've shared a post or Reel, so the link has to be right at publishing.

On Facebook, Pages without a subscription can publish two link posts a month. Past that, link posting requires Meta One for Business.

The limit began as a test in December 2025 and has since expanded to more Pages. Meta told Social Media Today that "publisher Pages are exempt from the test, in order to keep content flowing into the app."

If you cross-post from Instagram to a Facebook Page, the Facebook limit applies on the Facebook side.

Four places still carry a clickable link without a subscription. Two do not.

The bio is the most-used route and the weakest. Someone has to leave your post, open your profile, and pick the right link out of five. Every step loses people.

A Story link sticker is better for a single post. Share the post to your Story, add the sticker, and anyone who taps through lands on the page. Stories expire after 24 hours, so it works for a launch rather than for evergreen content.

A reply to your Story can also trigger a DM with the link through story-reply automation.

A DM is the most direct. The link goes to the one person who asked for it, and they can tap it without leaving the conversation.

How to add a link to an Instagram post without paying

This combines the three free routes so a single post can carry a link:

  1. Add the URL to your bio. In your profile settings, add it to your links. Put the one for this post first.
  2. Pick a one-word keyword for the post. Something short and specific, like GUIDE or PLAN.
  3. Say the keyword in the post itself. Put it in the caption and in the video. "Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the link."
  4. Set the keyword to trigger a DM. A comment-to-DM automation sends the link privately to everyone who comments the keyword.
  5. Share the post to your Story with a link sticker. This catches people who would rather tap than comment.
  6. Test it from a second account. Comment the keyword and confirm the DM arrives with a tappable link.
Six-step flow: add the URL to your bio, pick a keyword, say it in the post, let the keyword trigger a DM with the link, share the post to your Story with a link sticker, then test from a second account.

The free route. Step four is the one that keeps working while you sleep.

The DM step is the one that scales. Comments arrive while you sleep, and every one of them gets the link. The setup guide for automatic DMs walks through step four in detail.

The same conversation is where you can ask for an email, which our Instagram DM lead generation guide covers.

One rule shapes that DM. When someone comments, Instagram allows exactly one private reply. So the first message has to contain the link, not a promise of it. We explain why in our guide to Instagram DM marketing.

No source says it does, and none says it doesn't. Every published limit describes a public surface: a Facebook feed post, an Instagram caption, a Reel.

Meta's announcement describes what Instagram Plus, which the Meta One bundles include, adds to DMs. The list is cosmetic: "custom DM and Story fonts, notifications when certain people view your Story, and DM previews." It says nothing about DM links.

Meta has published link limits for public posts. It has not published a link limit for direct messages. That is not the same as confirming there isn't one.

Diagram contrasting a caption link that fans out to many viewers with a DM link sent to the one person who commented a keyword.

A caption link is a broadcast. A DM link is a reply to one person who asked.

The distinction that matters is broadcast versus reply. A caption link goes to everyone who sees the post. A DM link goes to one person who asked for it. Nothing Meta published in 2026 treats the two the same way.

We are not going to tell you DMs are permanently exempt. Meta has not said that, and a page that claimed it would be guessing about the thing you most need to be right.

The Instagram DM limits reference tracks every published rule for messages, and we will update both pages if that changes.

We measured how search behavior has moved around this change.

Source: Ubersuggest US monthly search data, pulled 30 September 2026. The September 2026 figure for can you put links in instagram posts is the current monthly average.

Bar chart of monthly US searches for facebook link limit: zero until a spike to 1,000 in December 2025, near zero through mid-2026, then rising to 90 in September 2026.

Searches spiked when Meta's test began, then climbed again as the limit expanded.

Two patterns stand out. Searches for facebook link limit jumped from zero to 1,000 in December 2025, the month Meta's test began. They collapsed, then started climbing again as the limit spread in September.

The Instagram question behaves differently. can you put links in instagram posts has held between 320 and 390 searches a month for over a year. People were asking long before Meta One existed. What changed in September was the answer.

For most creators, not for links alone. Four linked posts a month at $49.99 is a steep price when the bio, the Story sticker and a DM carry a link for nothing.

It can make sense in three cases. You post evergreen content where a caption link keeps working for months. Your audience won't comment or tap through to your profile. Or you already want Meta One's other features, and the links come as a bonus.

It makes less sense if your posts drive action through comments. A comment already signals intent, and a DM delivers the link to exactly that person. A caption link reaches everyone, including people who were never going to click.

If affiliate links are your use case, Reels have a separate native affiliate feature. Our guide to Instagram affiliate links covers where each one works.

How we checked this page

The prices and the "links in organic posts and reels" feature come from Meta's own announcement. The tier allowances, the renewal reset, the no-carry-over rule and the can't-edit-after-sharing rule come from Meta's help page for Meta One links. We read both on 30 September 2026.

Two things remain unconfirmed. Meta's help page does not mention the Essential tier, so we say "none listed" rather than "none." And no Meta source addresses links in DMs either way.

When Meta changes any of this, we will update the page and the date.

FAQ

Only with a Meta One subscription. Meta launched it on 15 September 2026, and its business tiers include links in organic posts and Reels. Without a subscription, a URL in a caption appears as plain text that nobody can tap. The cheapest tier that includes Instagram links is Advanced, from $49.99 a month.

Meta's help page lists Advanced, from $49.99, at four linked posts and four linked Reels a month. Expert, from $149, gets eight of each, and Max, from $499, gets twelve of each. The allowance resets when your subscription renews, and unused links don't carry over to the next month.

How do you add a link to an Instagram post for free?

Use the routes that still carry a clickable link. Add the URL to your bio, which holds up to five links. Share the post to your Story with a link sticker. Or ask people to comment a keyword and send the link by DM, which puts it in front of exactly the people who asked for it.

No. A URL typed into a comment on Instagram appears as plain text, and nobody can tap it. That is why many creators ask people to comment a keyword instead. The keyword triggers a direct message carrying the link, and a link in a DM is clickable. Meta One does not change how comment links work.

You can add up to five links to your Instagram bio. Instagram introduced multiple bio links in April 2023, replacing the old single-link limit. The bio is still free and needs no subscription. It works best when the link people need is listed first, because every extra step costs you clicks.

Meta has not published any link limit for direct messages. Its Meta One announcement describes only cosmetic DM features, such as custom fonts and message previews. Every published link limit covers public posts, captions and Reels. That silence is not a confirmation, so check again if Meta updates its subscription terms.

Facebook Pages without a subscription can publish two link posts a month. Past that, link posting requires Meta One for Business. The limit started as a test in December 2025 and expanded in September 2026. Publisher Pages are exempt, according to Meta's statement to Social Media Today.

Only with Meta One, which includes a monthly allowance of linked Reels on its business tiers. Without it, a Reel caption link is plain text. A Reel can still point people to a link for free by asking them to comment a keyword, then sending the link automatically by direct message.
