The three rules behind every Instagram size
- 1,080 pixels wide. Instagram keeps photos 320 to 1,080 pixels wide as they are, enlarges narrower ones and scales wider ones down to 1,080.
- Feed ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4. Landscape up to 1.91:1, portrait up to 3:4. Anything taller or wider is cropped.
- 9:16 for full-screen. Stories and Reels fill a 1080 × 1920 screen, and Meta recommends 9:16 to avoid cropping or blank space.
What changed in 2025
In January 2025, Instagram switched the profile grid from squares to 3:4 rectangles. That made 1080 × 1440 the size that fills a grid tile exactly, for posts, carousels and Reel covers.
Older square and 4:5 posts still show in full when someone opens them. On the grid, their sides are trimmed. The resizer’s “Show guides” option shows that crop before you post.
Instagram sizes for scheduling tools
Scheduling tools post through Meta’s publishing API, which has its own limits: feed images must be JPEG, up to 8 MB, with a ratio from 4:5 to 1.91:1. Reels can run 3 seconds to 15 minutes, and Story videos 3 to 60 seconds.
If you schedule posts, export portraits at 1080 × 1350 rather than 1080 × 1440. The post size guide covers this in more detail.

What are the Instagram sizes for 2026?
Feed posts: 1080 × 1440 (3:4), 1080 × 1350 (4:5), 1080 × 1080 (1:1) or 1080 × 566 (1.91:1). Stories and Reels: 1080 × 1920 (9:16). Carousels: up to 20 slides at one post size. Profile pictures and highlight covers have no official size; use a 1080 square or a 1080 × 1920 frame.
What is the best image size for Instagram?
1080 pixels wide, at the ratio that fits the format: 1080 × 1440 for feed posts and carousels, 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels. Instagram scales wider photos down to 1,080 pixels, so a bigger file gains nothing.
Did Instagram change post sizes in 2025?
Yes. In January 2025 the profile grid switched from square tiles to 3:4 rectangles, and Instagram now keeps feed photos up to 3:4 (1080 × 1440) without cropping. Square and 4:5 posts still work, but the grid trims their sides.
Why does Instagram crop my photos?
Because the photo’s ratio is outside what that format keeps. Feed posts must sit between 1.91:1 and 3:4; anything taller or wider is cropped. Stories and Reels fill a 9:16 screen. Resize the photo to the exact size first, so you decide what stays in view.
What size should a scheduled Instagram post be?
Use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) or wider. Scheduling tools publish through Meta’s API, whose reference lists a 4:5 to 1.91:1 range, JPEG only, up to 8 MB. Post 3:4 images from the Instagram app instead.
Is this Instagram resizer free?
Yes. It’s free, needs no account, and runs in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded. It exports a JPEG at the exact Instagram size and can also download a blank PNG template for each format.
