Instagram profile picture size (2026): what to upload

What Instagram does and doesn’t say about profile photos, the size we suggest, and a resizer with a circle guide.

In short: Instagram doesn’t publish an official profile picture size. It shows your photo as a small circle and hides the corners. Upload a square image, 1080 × 1080 pixels, so it stays sharp on any screen, and keep your face or logo inside the centre circle.

Why upload 1080 × 1080 if the circle is small?

Your profile picture is small on your profile, but it also appears in Stories, comments, DMs and on desktop at different sizes. A 1080-pixel square stays sharp everywhere, and the file is still small.

Instagram enlarges post photos narrower than 320 pixels, so treat 320 × 320 as a floor, not a target.

Profile picture tips for creators and brands

  • Faces: crop from the shoulders up, with your face filling most of the circle.
  • Logos: leave space around the mark so the circle doesn’t clip it. A plain background helps.
  • Contrast: a bright face or logo on a plain background reads best at small sizes.
  • Consistency: use the same picture on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube so people recognise you.
  • Text: avoid it. Words become unreadable at Story-ring size.

How to change your Instagram profile picture

  • Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  • Tap your current picture, then choose a new one from your photos.
  • Move and zoom it so your face or logo sits in the circle, then save.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Instagram profile picture?

Instagram doesn’t publish an official size. It shows your picture as a small circle in many places. Upload a square image, and 1080 × 1080 pixels is a safe choice: sharp on every screen and still a small file.

Why is my Instagram profile picture blurry?

Usually because the image was small or already compressed before upload, so Instagram had to enlarge it. Start from the original photo, crop it to a square, and export it at 1080 × 1080. Avoid screenshots, which lose detail.

Will Instagram crop my profile picture into a circle?

Yes. The picture is shown as a circle, so the corners of your square image are hidden. Keep your face or logo inside the centre circle. Turn on “Show guides” in the resizer to see exactly what the circle keeps.

Can I use a logo as my Instagram profile picture?

Yes, and most brands do. Centre the logo with some space around it, so the circle doesn’t clip the edges, and use a solid background colour. Simple marks read better than full wordmarks at small sizes.

Does this tool upload my photo?

No. The resizer runs in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device and nothing is saved. It draws the image at the size you pick and downloads a JPEG to your phone or computer.
