Instagram post size (2026): every dimension and ratio

The pixel sizes Instagram keeps sharp, which ratio to pick, and a free resizer that exports your photo at the exact size.

In short: The best Instagram post size is 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4). It’s the tallest ratio Instagram keeps without cropping, and it fills the rectangular profile grid. Instagram also keeps 4:5 (1080 × 1350), square (1080 × 1080) and landscape up to 1.91:1 (1080 × 566).

Post size dimensions at a glance

    Recommended

The most screen space in the feed, and it fills the profile grid tile.

  • Portrait 4:51080 × 1350

The classic portrait size, and the tallest one Meta’s publishing API accepts.

  • Square 1:11080 × 1080

Product shots and quote cards. The grid shows a 3:4 slice of it.

  • Landscape 1.91:11080 × 566

Wide scenes. It takes the least space in the feed.

Which Instagram post size should you use?

Pick the ratio by what the photo needs, then export it 1,080 pixels wide.

  • 1080 × 1440 (3:4): faces, outfits, food and anything vertical. It takes the most room in the feed.
  • 1080 × 1350 (4:5): the safe portrait choice if a scheduling tool posts for you (see below).
  • 1080 × 1080 (1:1): quote cards and product shots. Keep the subject in the middle, because the grid crops the sides.
  • 1080 × 566 (1.91:1): landscapes and group shots. It’s the smallest in the feed, so use it only when the scene is wide.

What happens if your photo is the wrong size?

Instagram fixes the size for you, but not always the way you’d like.

  • Too narrow: a photo under 320 pixels wide is enlarged to 320, so it can look soft.
  • Too wide: a photo over 1,080 pixels wide is scaled down to 1,080. Quality holds, but fine text shrinks.
  • Wrong shape: a ratio taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1 is cropped to fit. Text near the edges can be cut off.

Post size for scheduling tools

Tools that publish for you go through Meta’s content publishing API. Its image rules are stricter than the app’s: JPEG only, up to 8 MB, and a ratio from 4:5 to 1.91:1.

The API reference doesn’t list 3:4. If you schedule posts, export portraits at 1080 × 1350 (4:5), or post 3:4 images from the Instagram app.

How the profile grid shows your posts

Since January 2025, the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles instead of squares. A 3:4 post fills its tile exactly.

Square, 4:5 and landscape posts are trimmed at the sides in the grid. The full post still shows when someone opens it, but the grid is what new visitors see first.

  • Keep faces and text inside the middle of the frame.
  • Turn on “Show guides” in the resizer to see the grid crop before you post.

Tips for sharp Instagram posts

  • Export at exactly 1,080 pixels wide. Bigger files gain nothing; Instagram scales them down.
  • Use sRGB colour. Meta’s API converts other colour spaces to sRGB, which can shift colours.
  • Save as JPEG at high quality. PNG works in the app, but JPEG is what the API accepts.
  • Leave a margin around text. Captions in the image should sit well inside the edges.
  • Check the post on your phone before you share it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for an Instagram post?

1080 × 1440 pixels, a 3:4 portrait. It’s the tallest ratio Instagram keeps without cropping, it takes the most space in the feed, and it fills the 3:4 profile grid tile. If a scheduling tool posts for you, use 1080 × 1350 (4:5) instead.

Is 1080 × 1350 still a good Instagram post size?

Yes. 1080 × 1350 (4:5) is still fully supported, and it’s the tallest portrait Meta’s publishing API accepts. The only trade-off is the grid: the 3:4 tile trims a little from each side, so keep key details away from the left and right edges.

What happens to square posts on the new grid?

They still post as squares and open as squares. On your profile grid, Instagram shows a 3:4 slice from the middle, so the left and right edges are hidden until someone taps the post. Centre your subject and keep text away from the sides.

What resolution does Instagram use for photos?

Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1,080 pixels wide at their original resolution, as long as the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Narrower photos are enlarged to 320 pixels and wider ones are scaled down to 1,080, according to Instagram’s Help Centre.

Can I post a vertical 9:16 photo to the feed?

Not at full height. A 9:16 photo is taller than 3:4, so Instagram crops it to fit the feed. Use the resizer to place it in a 1080 × 1440 frame, either cropped or fitted with a background, so you choose what stays in view.

Does this resizer upload my photo?

No. The resizer runs in your browser. Your photo never leaves your device, and nothing is saved. It draws the image onto a canvas at the exact Instagram size and downloads a JPEG straight to your phone or computer.
