How to write an Instagram caption that gets comments
- Lead with the hook. Only the first line or two show before “more”. Make it a question, a promise or a surprising line.
- Say one thing. One tip, one story or one offer per caption. Save the rest for the next post.
- Ask for one action. Comment, save, share or tap the link. Two asks split attention.
- Give a reason to comment. A question people can answer in a word, or a keyword that gets them something.
- Finish with up to five hashtags that describe the post. Instagram now caps captions at five.

Caption calls to action that work
- Comment a keyword: “Comment PLAN and I’ll DM you the guide.” Every comment is a conversation, and it tells Instagram people care.
- Save: “Save this for your next grocery run.” Best for tips, lists and recipes.
- Share: “Send this to the friend who always asks.” Best for relatable or useful posts.
- Answer a question: “Which one are you trying first?” Easy to answer in a word.
- Tap the link: “Link in bio.” Works, but it asks people to leave the post; a DM keeps them in the app.
Keyword captions work best when the DM arrives without you lifting a finger. Read how to automatically DM Instagram comments, or our guide to getting more comments.

How long can an Instagram caption be?
2,200 characters. Meta’s developer documentation for publishing posts sets a maximum of 2,200 characters per caption. Only the first line or two show before “more”, so put the hook first.
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Five per post or Reel. Instagram said in December 2025 that it would gradually limit captions to five hashtags. Pick specific tags that describe the post rather than broad, crowded ones.
What makes a good Instagram caption?
A first line that makes people stop, one idea in the middle, and one clear thing to do next: comment, save, share or tap a link. Write the way you talk, and cut anything that doesn’t help the post.
Is this caption generator AI?
No. It builds captions from your topic and offer plus short templates for each goal and tone, in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. Edit each caption so it’s accurate and sounds like you.
What’s a comment keyword caption?
A caption that asks people to comment one word, like “Comment PLAN”, in exchange for something useful. With comment-to-DM automation, everyone who comments gets your link by DM. Check your word first with the comment keyword planner.
Should captions be long or short?
Match the post. A Reel with a strong hook can work with one line. Teaching posts and stories often do better with more detail. Whatever the length, the first line does most of the work.
