How to use the Instagram DM Link Generator
- 1. Open your Instagram profile and copy your username — the handle in the URL, not your display name.
- 2. Remove the @ if you copied one. The link takes the bare username.
- 3. Paste it into the generator above, or type https://ig.me/m/ followed by your username.
- 4. Add a tracking reference only if you have somewhere to read it back — an app connected to your account via Meta's messaging API. If you don't, leave it empty.
- 5. Press Copy link and grab the result.
- 6. Test it on a phone, from an account that is not yours. This is the step people skip, and it is the one that catches a typo in the username.
- 7. Put it where people already are: your link-in-bio, an email footer, a website contact button, a QR code on print.
- 8. Decide what happens when the thread opens — an empty inbox is where most of these links quietly fail.
What the ?ref parameter actually does
The tracking reference is the part of ig.me links most guides get wrong. It is not a message and it is not visible to the person clicking. When they open the link, Meta delivers the ref to an app connected to your account as a webhook referral object — source “SHORTLINK”, type “OPEN_THREAD” — so an automation can branch on which link, campaign or post the person came from. Two conditions apply: your account needs Icebreakers configured, and it must be published. Without a connected app reading the webhook, the ref does nothing useful, which is why the generator leaves it empty by default.
Where the link opens, and where it doesn't
ig.me links open the Instagram app on iOS and Android at version 235 or newer. They are currently not supported on Instagram Web — a desktop click will not open the thread. Plan for that: if a meaningful share of your audience is on desktop, pair the link with a visible username or a QR code they can scan with a phone.

What is an Instagram DM link?

What does the ?ref parameter do?
Meta lets you append ?ref= to the link (up to 2,083 characters; letters, numbers and - _ = only). When someone opens the link, that reference is delivered to a connected messaging app through a webhook, so you can tell which link they came from. It is a tracking tag, not a message, and it only works if your account has Icebreakers configured and is published.
Can I pre-fill a message in an Instagram DM link?
Not through anything Meta documents for ig.me. (WhatsApp's wa.me links support a ?text= parameter; Instagram's ig.me links are not documented to.) The link opens an empty thread — what happens next depends on your setup.
Why doesn't my ig.me link open on desktop?
Because Meta documents that ig.me links are currently not supported on Instagram Web. They open in the Instagram app on iOS and Android, version 235 and above.
Do I need the @ symbol?
No — use the bare username. If you paste one with an @, the generator strips it for you.
Where should I put the link?
