What does mutual mean on Instagram?
Mutual followers are the accounts you have in common with someone. If you follow Alex, and Alex follows Sam, Alex shows up as a mutual when you open Sam's profile.
"Mutuals" is also slang for people who follow each other. "We're mutuals" means you follow them and they follow you back. You'll see it in requests like "mutuals only" for a private account.
What does "Followed by" mean on a profile?
When you open someone's profile, the line under their bio, such as "Followed by alex and 12 others", lists accounts you follow that also follow them. It's Instagram's quick way of showing your mutual connections. If you share none, the line doesn't appear.
How to see mutual followers on Instagram
- Open the person's profile.
- Tap the Followed by line under their bio.
- You'll see the list of mutual followers. You can also tap their Followers count and look for the Mutual tab.
Mutual followers vs mutuals
| Term | Meaning | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Mutual followers | Accounts you follow that also follow this person | "Followed by" line, Mutual tab |
| Mutuals | Two accounts that follow each other | Slang in bios, comments and DMs |
| Followed by | Instagram's label for your mutual connections | Under a profile's bio |
Why mutuals matter
Mutual connections help Instagram decide what to show you. They're one reason an account appears in Suggested for you, and why you get "someone you might know" notifications. For people, a familiar name in "Followed by" makes a new account feel safer to follow.
