What does Highlights mean on Instagram?
Highlights are Stories you've chosen to keep on your profile. Instagram added them in December 2017, describing a new section on your profile below your bio. Each Highlight is a circle with a cover and a name. Tap it, and the Stories inside play in order.
Instagram's own words: "Highlights stay on your profile until you remove them."
Highlights vs Stories vs archive
| Stories | Highlights | Stories archive | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How long | 24 hours | Until you remove them | Saved automatically |
| Who sees it | Your Story audience | People who can see your profile | Only you |
| Where | Top of the feed | Below your bio | Your profile menu |
The archive is what makes Highlights possible. Instagram saves your Stories there when they expire, and you can turn that off in settings. More in what Archive means on Instagram.
How to make a Highlight
- Go to your profile and tap New (the circle with a plus) under your bio.
- Pick Stories from your archive.
- Tap Next, choose a cover and add a name.
- Tap Done. The Highlight appears on your profile.
You can also add a Story to a Highlight while it's live: open the Story and tap Highlight.
How creators and brands use Highlights
- Start here: who you are and what you post.
- FAQ: the questions you answer every week.
- Products or services: with prices and how to buy.
- Reviews: screenshots of real feedback, with permission.
- Links: Stories with link stickers you want to keep available.
Keep covers simple and names short so the row reads like a menu.
A tip for creators and brands
Highlights answer questions before people ask. For the people who do ask, add a keyword to your Stories ("Reply PRICE"). BuzzWire's story-reply automation sends the answer and the link in a DM, free on the official API.
