In short:
- Archive means hiding a post or story so only you can see it, without deleting it.
- An archived post disappears from your profile for everyone else, and it keeps all its likes and comments.
- You can show it again any time, and it returns to its original spot on your grid.
- Stories go to your Stories archive automatically after 24 hours, unless you turn that off.
- Find everything under Profile → Menu → Archive.

What does Archive mean on Instagram?
Archiving is Instagram's "hide, don't delete" button. Instagram says you can archive a post "to hide it from your profile and make it so that your followers and other people on Instagram can't see it." Nothing is lost: "When you archive a post, it keeps all its likes and comments."
There are two archives on Instagram:
- Posts archive: posts you've chosen to hide from your profile.
- Stories archive: a private copy of the stories you've shared, saved after they expire.
Instagram notes that the Stories archive and Highlights aren't available for all accounts.
How to archive a post
- Go to your profile and tap the post.
- Tap Options in the top right.
- Select Archive.
You can also archive several posts at once from your profile.
How to unarchive a post
- Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right.
- Tap Archive.
- At the top, switch from Stories archive to Posts archive.
- Tap the post, tap Options, then Show on profile.
Instagram says the post "will return to its original spot on your profile," so your grid order stays as it was.
How the Stories archive works
Every story you share is saved to your Stories archive once it expires, and only you can see it there. Instagram says archived stories "can't be seen on Instagram unless you choose to share them."
- Archive a story early: tap Options on the story, then Archive.
- Save one to your phone: open Archive, pick the story, tap Options, then Save photo or Save video.
- Reshare an old story: open it from your archive and share it again, or add it to a Highlight.
- Turn it off: in Settings, under Archiving and downloading, switch off Save story to archive. From then on, stories are deleted after 24 hours.
Two details worth knowing: to save storage, Instagram may mute music or freeze GIFs in some archived stories, and it says archived stories you shared publicly "will be used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or change your account to private."
Archive vs delete
| Archive | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see it | Only you | No one |
| Likes and comments | Kept | Removed with the post |
| Can you bring it back? | Yes, to the same spot | No |
If you might want a post again, archive it. Delete only what you're sure you'll never need.
A tip for creators and brands
Archive seasonal posts instead of deleting them. A Black Friday or launch post that's out of date can come off your grid after the sale and come back next year with its likes and comments intact. Pair it with a pinned post at the top of your grid for the offer that's live now. See what Pinned means on Instagram and our Black Friday Instagram strategy.
