In short:
- DM stands for "direct message": a private message between you and one or more people on Instagram.
- DMs live in the Messages tab, and Instagram calls each conversation a chat. They don't show in your feed, search or profile.
- You can message anyone, but if they don't follow you, your DM may arrive as a message request first.
- Until a request is accepted, it can only contain text: no photos, videos or voice notes.
- "DM me" simply means: send me a private message.

What does DM mean on Instagram?
DM is short for direct message. It's a private conversation with one person or a small group, separate from everything you post publicly. Instagram's app labels the inbox Messages, and its Help Center calls conversations "chats". You may still hear the older name, Instagram Direct. All three mean the same thing.
People use DM as a noun ("check your DMs") and as a verb ("DM me the link"). Either way, it's private: Instagram says messages "won't appear in feed, search or your profile."
How do you send a DM on Instagram?
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the app.
- Tap Compose in the top right.
- Pick one or more people.
- Type your message, or add a photo or video from your camera or library.
- Tap Send. You can also schedule a message to send later.
Shortcut: on the profile of someone you follow, tap Message.
Who can you DM on Instagram?
Instagram's rule is simple: "You can send a message to anyone when using Instagram." A few things change depending on whether the person knows you:
- They don't follow you: depending on their settings, your DM may land in their message requests instead of their main inbox.
- They accept: after that, your future messages go straight to their inbox.
- Before they accept: Instagram says a request "can only contain text." Photos, videos and voice notes wait until they accept.
- Disappearing photos and videos only go to people who follow you or who already approved your messages.
If your messages seem to vanish, they're often sitting in requests. Here's how Instagram message requests work.
What can you send in a DM?
- Text, plus photos and videos you take or upload
- Posts you see in feed
- Disappearing photos and videos
- Instagram profiles
- Voice messages, reactions and replies to a specific message
A post you send only shows to people who can already see it. Instagram's example: send a post from a private account, and only that account's followers can view it. Photos and videos sent in a chat also won't appear on hashtag or location pages.
DM phrases you'll see on Instagram
| Phrase | What it means |
|---|---|
| "DM me" | Send me a private message |
| "Check your DMs" | I sent you a message |
| "DMs are open" | I'm happy to get messages, including from people I don't follow |
| "DM for collab" | Message me privately about working together |
| "Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you" | Comment the keyword and you'll get a link by private message |
Can businesses send automated DMs?
Yes, within Instagram's rules. The Help Center says it plainly: "Instagram accounts you message may use third-party apps or automated services to send messages in chats."
That's how "Comment GUIDE for the link" posts work. A tool connected to Instagram's official API sends one private reply to each person who commented the keyword. Meta's rules allow one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. If the person replies, the chat continues inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window. More on the mechanics in what Instagram DM automation is.
A tip for creators and brands
DMs are where a follower turns into a click. Instead of "link in bio", ask people to comment a keyword and send the link straight to their DMs, where they can't miss it. BuzzWire's comment-to-DM automation does this free, on the official API.
FAQ
What does DM mean on Instagram?
DM means direct message. It's a private message between you and one or more people, sent from the Messages tab. DMs don't appear in your feed, in search or on your profile, and you can use the word as a noun ("my DMs") or a verb ("DM me").
Are Instagram DMs private?
Yes. Only the people in the chat can see the messages, and they never appear in feed, search or on a profile. One exception to keep in mind: if you share a post in a DM, it only shows to people who could already see that post.
Why did my DM go to message requests?
Because the person doesn't follow you. Depending on their settings, Instagram files messages from people they don't follow as message requests. Once they accept, your future messages go straight to their inbox. Until then, your request can only contain text.
Can I DM someone who doesn't follow me?
Yes. Instagram lets you message anyone, but your DM may arrive as a message request, and it can only include text until they accept. Disappearing photos and videos only go to people who follow you or have already approved your messages.
What does "DM for collab" mean?
It means the account wants brands or other creators to message them privately about paid work or a partnership. It's different from Instagram's Collab feature, which is a post with two co-authors. See what Collab means on Instagram.
