In short:
- A Collab is one post co-authored by two or more accounts. Instagram calls it a way to "co-author posts with other accounts."
- When a collaborator accepts, the post is shared with their followers and appears on their profile too.
- You can add up to five collaborators to a post. Stories can't be Collabs.
- Collaborators can see all the likes and comments on the post.
- Only the original creator can delete it, but anyone invited can remove themselves.

What does Collab mean on Instagram?
A Collab is a shared post. Instead of two creators posting the same reel separately, one creates it and invites the other as a co-author. Instagram's Help Center explains that if the invited account accepts, the post "will be shared with their followers. It will also appear on their profile."
That's the difference from a tag: a tagged post stays on one profile, while a Collab is shared by every author.
How do Instagram Collabs work?
From Instagram's Help Center:
- Who starts it: the original creator invites collaborators while sharing the post.
- How many: "You can add up to five collaborators to your post."
- Where it shows: on the creator's profile and on every collaborator's profile who accepts.
- Engagement: collaborators "can see all likes and comments on the post."
- Formats: feed posts and reels. "You can't add collaborators to your stories."
Who can you invite to a Collab?
It depends on your privacy setting:
- Public accounts can invite public or private accounts.
- Private accounts can only invite accounts that follow them.
The invited account has to accept before it becomes a collaborator. Until then, the post lives on the creator's profile only.
How to leave or remove a Collab
- Invited collaborators "can remove themselves at any time."
- The original creator can remove a collaborator at any time.
- Deleting: "Only the original creator can delete the post."
- Blocking: if either account blocks the other, the collaboration ends, but the post stays on the creator's profile.
Collab vs tag vs remix
| Collab | Tag | Remix | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | One post, several authors | Your name linked on someone's post | A new reel built on someone's reel |
| Shared to your followers | Yes, once you accept | No | No, it's their reel |
| On your profile | Yes, in your grid | In your Tagged tab | No |
| Who can delete it | The original creator | The poster | The remixer |
More on each: what Tagged means and what Remix means.
A tip for creators and brands
Collabs are a simple way to reach a second audience without a paid ad. They suit sponsored posts too, because one post can sit on both the creator's and the brand's profile. Agree up front who hosts the post and what the call to action is. If the caption says "Comment GUIDE and we'll DM you the link", decide which account sends that DM so every commenter gets it. Our comment-to-DM guide covers the setup, and the money calculator helps you price a sponsored Collab.
