Those are three different answers to one question. At most one of them is right.

The safe reading is the narrow one. A story comment is visible to people other than the creator. Exactly which people depends on a setting, and on who follows whom.

When Instagram added comments to stories

Instagram launched comments on stories on 3 September 2024.

PhoneArena reports the announcement from Instagram's own account that day. It reads: "now you can leave comments on Stories to show your besties some love."

The same report states that comments disappear after 24 hours, along with the story.

The feature is therefore two years old, not new. That matters, because at least one ranking page describes it as a 2025 or 2026 introduction. It also matters because a two-year-old feature has had time to change quietly, and none of the reporting covers what it looks like today.

How to turn off story replies on Instagram

You can stop story replies entirely, or limit them to people you follow.

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
2. Tap the menu, then Settings and privacy.
3. Open Story, live and location, then your story privacy controls.
4. Find the replies setting for your story.
5. Choose Off, People you follow, or Everyone.

Turning replies off removes the message box from your story. People can still react with an emoji in some cases, and they can still send you a normal DM. The setting changes how your story behaves, not your inbox.

Menu names move between app versions. The control lives in your story privacy settings whatever the current wording is.

Controlling who can comment on your stories

Comments have their own control, separate from the replies setting.

1. Open your story privacy settings.
2. Find the comments control, listed separately from replies.
3. Turn comments off, or restrict who can leave one.
4. Check a live story afterwards to confirm the change took effect.

Turning off comments does not turn off replies, and turning off replies does not turn off comments. They are two switches. A creator who wants DMs but not public chatter turns comments off and leaves replies on.

What story comments mean if you automate story replies

A story comment is not a message, so message automation does not see it.

We could not read Instagram's help-centre pages today, and we are saying so rather than hiding it.

The Instagram help articles that would settle exactly who sees a story comment returned an empty shell on 28 September 2026. So the boundary in the section above stays attributed to secondary sources. Meta's developer documentation, which we could read, covers automated private replies to comments but does not mention the newer story-comments feature — so it does not close the gap either.

When the help-centre pages are readable again, we will replace those citations with Instagram's own, and publish the date we did it.

Three things stay open until then. Who exactly can see a story comment. Whether the comment control behaves the same on every account type. Whether Meta's API exposes the new story comments at all.
