In short:
- Most Instagram comments that "don't show" are hidden on purpose by a filter or a setting, not lost to a bug.
- Instagram's "Hide unwanted comments" filter is on by default, and the person who wrote a hidden comment isn't told.
- Post owners can see hidden comments by tapping View hidden comments at the bottom of the comments.
- Commenting turned off, Limits, Restrict and blocks all stop comments from appearing in different ways.
- If your own comment won't post, update the app and check Instagram's limits: no more than five @mentions, and no posting the same comment repeatedly.
Every reason below is documented by Instagram, linked to its Help Center or Transparency Center page and checked on 27 Oct 2026.
Comments are how people answer your call to action, ask about a product or say a post helped them. When they go missing, it feels like your reach broke. Usually it's one of nine settings and filters. Here's how to find which one.
Why are Instagram comments not showing?
Start with who can't see the comment:
| You're… | What's happening | Most likely reasons |
|---|---|---|
| The post owner, and comments are missing | Comments on your post are hidden or blocked | 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 |
| A commenter, and your comment vanished | Your comment was filtered, hidden or never posted | 1, 2, 5, 8, 9 |
| A viewer, and the count doesn't match | Some comments are hidden or ranked lower | 1, 7 |
1. The "Hide unwanted comments" filter caught it
Instagram's filter is "on by default". It hides comments with "common offensive words, phrases or emojis." There's also a Hide spam filter, and your own Hidden words list for words, phrases, numbers or emojis you choose (Instagram Help Center).
Two details matter:
- The commenter isn't told. Instagram says "when a comment or message is hidden, the person who sent it won't know."
- Hidden comments still count. They "are still included in your total comment count", which is why the number can look higher than what you see.
Fix: as the post owner, scroll to the bottom of the comments, tap View hidden comments, then Unhide any you want to show. Review your Hidden words list if real comments keep getting caught.
2. You hid it by hand
If you hide a comment yourself, Instagram says "Other people won't be able to see the comment." It's still there for you, under View hidden comments.
Fix: open hidden comments and unhide it.
3. Comments are limited to certain people
You can let Everyone comment, or only People you follow, Your followers, or both (Instagram Help Center). Anyone outside that group can't comment at all.
Fix: open your comment settings under Menu → How others can interact with you and widen who can comment.
4. Commenting is turned off on the post
When you turn commenting off on a post, "any comments that are currently on your post will be hidden." They come back if you turn commenting on again (Instagram Help Center).
Fix: open the post's options and turn commenting back on.
5. Limits are on
Limit interactions hides comments from groups of accounts, such as recent followers or accounts that don't follow you. Their comments "will be hidden unless you approve them" and "will remain hidden after you've turned off this tool" (Instagram Help Center). More in what Limit interactions means.
Fix: review hidden comments and approve the ones you want, or turn Limits off when the busy spell passes.
6. The commenter is restricted or blocked
- Restrict: a restricted person's new comments "will only be visible to that person" until you tap See comment and Approve (Instagram Help Center). See what Restrict means.
- Block: when you block someone, "their likes and comments will be removed from your photos and videos," and unblocking doesn't bring them back (Instagram Help Center).
Fix: unrestrict to show future comments. Blocked comments can't be restored.
7. Comments are sorted by relevance
Instagram shows comments "in an order of relevance to you", not strictly newest first, and filters out comments "that may go against our Community Guidelines" (Meta Transparency Center). A comment can be there but further down.
Fix: switch the comments view to Most recent to see the newest first.
8. Your comment broke a posting rule
If your own comment won't post, Instagram lists a few causes (Instagram Help Center):
- More than five @mentions in one comment.
- More than 30 hashtags in one comment.
- Posting the same comment multiple times.
- Words or phrases Instagram filters.
Fix: shorten it, remove extra mentions and write it in your own words.
9. The app needs an update, or it's a wider problem
Instagram's first advice for anything not working is to update the app, restart your phone, try a different network, and reinstall if needed (Instagram Help Center). If comments fail for many people at once, it may be an outage. Our post on Instagram DMs not working covers how to check.
Fix: update, restart, switch networks, then report it with Menu → Help → Report a problem.
How to see hidden comments on Instagram
- Open your post.
- Tap the comment icon and scroll to the bottom.
- Tap View hidden comments.
- Tap a comment and choose Unhide to show it to everyone.
Instagram's Help Center wording differs slightly: for filtered comments it says others can choose to see them by tapping View hidden comments, and for comments you hid yourself it says other people can't see them. Either way, unhiding makes a comment visible again.
A tip for creators who ask for comments
If your caption says "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it", every comment is a request. Check View hidden comments on those posts, especially after a spike, and keep keywords to plain, everyday words. Unusual strings of symbols or repeated text are the kind of thing spam filters are built to catch.

FAQ
Why are my Instagram comments not showing up?
Usually a filter or setting is hiding them. Instagram's "Hide unwanted comments" filter is on by default, and Hidden words, Limits, Restrict, comment controls and blocks can all hide comments. Post owners can check View hidden comments at the bottom of the comments section to find and unhide them.
Why does my comment count not match the comments I see?
Hidden comments are still counted. Instagram's Help Center says hidden comments "are still included in your total comment count." Comments are also sorted by relevance, so some sit further down the list.
Does Instagram tell someone if their comment is hidden?
No. Instagram says "when a comment or message is hidden, the person who sent it won't know."
How do I see hidden comments on Instagram?
Open your post, go to the bottom of the comments and tap View hidden comments. From there, you can unhide any comment so everyone can see it.
Why can't I comment on an Instagram post?
The account may only allow comments from certain people, or commenting may be turned off. If your comment won't post, check that it has no more than five @mentions and isn't the same comment you've already posted, then update the app.
