- Muting someone on Instagram hides their posts, their stories or their messages from you, without unfollowing them.
- Instagram says it "won't let them know that you muted them".
- You choose what to mute: posts, stories, messages, calls and notes are separate.
- You can still visit their profile and see everything there.
- Mute only changes what you see. To limit what they can do, use Restrict or Block.
Everything below comes from Instagram's Mute help page and related help pages, checked 22 Oct 2026.
What happens when you mute someone on Instagram?
Their content stops appearing where you'd normally see it, and nothing changes for them. Depending on what you mute:
- Posts: their posts stop appearing in your feed.
- Stories: their stories leave the bar at the top of your feed. Their posts and notes still show.
- Messages: you stop getting notified about their messages. You can also mute calls.
- Notes: notes are muted separately. Muting posts, stories or messages doesn't mute notes.
You still follow them, and you can still see their posts and stories by visiting their profile.
Does someone know if you mute them?
No. Instagram's help page says: "Instagram won't let them know that you muted them." The same goes for notes: "People won't be notified when you mute their notes."
How to mute someone on Instagram
From Instagram's help pages (menu names as of 22 Oct 2026):
- Posts or stories, from their profile: go to their profile, tap Following, tap Mute, then turn on Posts or Stories.
- From your feed: tap Options next to their post, tap Hide, then Mute and choose posts, or posts and story.
- A story, from the story bar: press and hold their profile picture at the top of your feed, then tap Mute.
- Messages: open the chat, tap their name at the top, tap Mute, then turn on Mute messages or Mute calls.
- Notes: in Messages, press and hold their note and tap Mute notes.
To unmute, follow the same path and turn the switch off.
Mute vs restrict vs block vs unfollow
| Mute | Restrict | Block | Unfollow | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| They're notified | No | No | No | No |
| You still follow them | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Their content in your feed | Hidden | Shown | Gone | Mostly gone |
| What they can do | Nothing changes | Comments hidden, DMs to requests | No contact | Nothing changes |
Mute is for your own peace of mind. If someone is bothering you, see what Restrict means on Instagram, which hides their comments from others and moves their DMs to requests.
A tip for creators
If you run DM automation, muting a busy chat is a way to quiet notifications without missing anything: the automation still replies, and the conversation stays in your inbox for you to read later. Don't mute customers you need to answer within the 24-hour window.
FAQ
What does mute mean on Instagram?
It means hiding someone's posts, stories, messages or notes from your own view without unfollowing or blocking them. They aren't told, and you can unmute any time.
If I mute someone, can they still see my posts?
Yes. Muting only changes what you see. They can still see your posts and stories, comment and message you.
Can you see someone's story if you muted them?
Yes. Their story leaves the bar at the top of your feed, but you can tap their profile picture on their profile to watch it.
What's the difference between mute and restrict on Instagram?
Mute hides someone's content from you and changes nothing for them. Restrict limits them: their new comments are visible only to them unless you approve them, and their messages go to your message requests.
