Meta AI on Instagram: what it does for creators and brands

What Meta AI does on Instagram in 2026: chat in DMs, image edits, Reels translation and dubbing, AI labels, what happens to your data, and what brands can use.

Meta AI on Instagram: What It Does for Creators (2026)
On this page

In short:

  • Meta AI is Meta's assistant, built into Instagram's DMs and search. You can chat with it, @-mention it in group chats, and ask it to create or edit images.
  • For creators, the most useful feature is Reels translation and dubbing: free for public accounts where Meta AI is available, in 14 languages on Instagram, with optional lip sync.
  • AI Studio is closed to new characters. Since 10 August 2026 nobody can create or edit an AI version of themselves; existing ones keep running.
  • Since 12 May 2026, Meta AI across Instagram runs on Meta's newer model, Muse Spark.
  • Meta says it doesn't train its AI on your private messages unless you or someone in the chat shares them with Meta AI. Chats with Meta AI itself are used to personalise ads and content in most regions.

This guide covers what Meta AI does on Instagram today, what it means for creators and brands, and what it doesn't do. Every feature links to Meta's own announcement, checked on 22 October 2026.

What is Meta AI on Instagram?

Meta AI is the AI assistant Meta builds into Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Threads. On Instagram you'll find it in the search bar in your DMs and as a chat you can open like any other conversation.

In May 2026 Meta said its new model, Muse Spark, "is starting to bring the same intelligence to Meta AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook" and its other apps (Meta, updated 12 May 2026).

Don't confuse it with Muse, the agent app: a separate personal assistant Meta launched in September 2026 that runs outside Instagram. We cover it in Meta Muse for Instagram creators.

Chat, captions and replies

Meta's Instagram blog describes opening Meta AI from the search bar in your DMs, or tagging it "in any private or group chat" (Instagram, 23 Dec 2024). The same post shows it suggesting captions and helping write replies.

For creators, that makes it a brainstorming partner: hooks, caption drafts, comment replies, content ideas. Treat the output as a first draft. It doesn't know your audience, and it won't check facts about your products.

Images: "Imagine me" and photo edits

In a chat, you can type "Imagine me as…" to generate images of yourself after adding your own photos, or send a photo and ask Meta AI to change it. In Stories, Meta added Restyle in October 2025 for prompt-based edits (9to5Mac, 23 Oct 2025).

In July 2026 Meta launched a new image model, Muse Image, with "more than 30 new AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories". On Instagram it's available in Stories in the US (Meta AI blog, 7 Jul 2026). A launch feature that let people @-mention public accounts and generate images from their photos was removed three days later; Meta said it "missed the mark" (Meta, 7 Jul 2026, updated).

Meta AI Reels translation and dubbing

This is the Meta AI feature that matters most for creators who want reach outside their own language. Meta AI can translate the audio of a Reel into another language, with optional lip syncing, so a viewer hears you in their language.

From Meta's Reels translation announcement and its updates:

  • Who: free "to all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is available".
  • Languages on Instagram: English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese at launch (October 2025); Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada added in January 2026; French, German, Italian, Japanese and Korean added in July 2026.
  • Label: every translated Reel is marked "Translated with Meta AI".
  • Viewer control: viewers can choose "Don't translate" in the audio and language settings of the three-dot menu.

How to use it well:

  • Speak clearly and keep music low under your voice, so the translation has clean audio to work with.
  • Check the translated version before you rely on it for anything that needs to be exact, such as prices or instructions.
  • Watch where views come from in Insights after you turn it on, to see whether new languages are paying off.

AI Studio: can creators still make an AI of themselves?

No longer. AI Studio let creators build an AI version of themselves to answer common DM questions and story replies, with clearly labelled responses. On 10 August 2026 Meta said people "will no longer be able to create new AI characters or edit existing ones as part of AI Studio". Existing characters and chats remain active (Meta, updated 10 Aug 2026).

If you were planning to use an AI double for DMs, keyword automation is the reliable alternative: it answers the questions you choose with the messages you write. Our Instagram chatbot guide compares the options.

AI labels on Instagram

Instagram labels AI content in a few ways:

  • "Translated with Meta AI" on translated Reels.
  • "AI info" labels you can add when you post AI-generated content.
  • "AI-generated profile": since 31 August 2026, Instagram asks accounts that feature an AI-generated person to turn on this profile label, and says it will "limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person and do not add this label" (Instagram creators blog, 31 Aug 2026).

Can you turn off Meta AI on Instagram?

We found no setting in Meta's documentation that removes Meta AI from Instagram entirely. What you can do:

  • Ignore it. It only acts when you open the chat or tag it.
  • Mute or delete its chat in your inbox like any other conversation.
  • Turn off translations as a viewer with "Don't translate".
  • In the EU, use the objection form Meta provides if you don't want your public content or Meta AI chats used for training.

What Meta does with your data

From Meta's own posts:

  • Private messages: Meta says it does not use "the content of your private messages with friends and family to train our AIs", unless you or someone in the chat shares those messages with Meta AI (Meta, privacy and generative AI).
  • Your chats with Meta AI: since 16 December 2025, Meta uses interactions with its AI features to personalise content and ads, in "most regions". It says it doesn't use sensitive topics, such as health or political views, to show ads (Meta, 1 Oct 2025).
  • EU: public posts and comments from adults, and interactions with Meta AI, are used for training, with a form to object; public data from under-18s isn't used (Meta, updated 27 Mar 2026).

Practical rule: don't tag Meta AI into a chat with a customer or collaborator unless everyone's happy for that conversation to be shared with it.

Meta AI for brands and businesses

Meta's own AI customer-service product, Business Agent, is coming to Instagram. On 3 June 2026 Meta said Business Agent answers questions, recommends products from your catalog, books appointments and qualifies leads, and added: "We're also expanding Business Agent to Instagram." Getting started is free, with paid subscriptions to follow (Meta, 3 Jun 2026).

Third-party tools can use AI too. Meta's messaging policy for its platforms doesn't ban AI replies, but automated chats must say they're automated where the law requires it, and replies still work inside the same 24-hour window (Meta messaging policy).
